City Guide: 24 Hours in Dubai

Playing tourist atop the tallest building in the world!

It’s been a dream of mine to go to Dubai since I was in high school. For more than 10 years I’ve been fascinated by this dichotomous oasis in the Middle East. A place where the religion and the government follow strict Muslim rules, and yet business, luxury, and excess thrive. This place where things that shouldn’t exist, do: indoor ski slopes, islands that look like palm trees, and skyscrapers that tower over every other in the world. So this year, I finally made it! For a bit more than 24 hours, I explored one of the most interesting cities in the world, and I want to share where I ate, played & stayed with you!

JW Marriott Marquis, Dubai

Stay: JW Marriott Marquis
It wasn’t enough for Dubai to have the tallest building the world (the Burj Khalifa) they have to have the tallest hotel in the world as well! In true fashion for the City of Gold, the hotel is not one but two towers. Identical buildings standing 72 stories tall, the palm-tree inspired structures will have nine restaurants and five bars when both are fully open in 2014.
Insider tip: The upgrade to the Executive floor gets you a spectacular view and can be helpful if you have a late flight out of DXB.

Eat: In a city devoted to the most extravagant in everything, amazing restaurants are not going to be difficult to find. But whether you talk to fellow a tourist or get a recommendation from a local, Zuma will be a name you hear time and again. Dress smart, and go early for a sparkling cocktail in the bar before your meal!
Insider tip: Order the miso marinated black cod. Life changing.

The Burj Al Arab, high tea is on our list for next trip!

Play: There’s an endless amount of things to do in Dubai. In 24 hours, we wanted an introduction to the city, so we chose a guided tour of the sights and sounds that make up this bustling desert metropolis. Our guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and helpful, and allowed us a great introduction to Dubai. Highlights included the spice market, the gold market, and Jumeriah beach.
