Friday, September 27th, 2013 | What's Hot this Weekend

The crisp autumn air brings with it boots, beer, and outdoor fun. With apple season here, Oktoberfest running through October 6th, and pumpkin spice flavored everything now available, it is time to put on some boots and make a weekend out of one or all of these fun fall activities. This week we highlight apple picking and how to turn it into an enjoyable girls excursion.

Apple Picking:

Apple picking has become a great activity to make a weekend out of. What is there to do after a day of picking? Well for starters, you can feast on some amazing apple pies, sip on some wine, or spend some time with girlfriends enjoying a walk as the leaves change colors. Some of our fav apple picking spots are below.

Apple Hill, CA: The name says is all. Located between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, Apple Hill is a picturesque town with over 50 apple ranches. There are many types of apples available in the the region, the variety of apples available include golden delicious, granny smith, pippen, pink lady, rome beauty, fuji, gala and mutsu. Other types of fruit available are pears, pumpkins, cherries, grapes, plums and persimmons.

Stay for the wineries, breweries, and spas. After a hard day of apple picking with the ladies, unwind with a relaxing massage at Time Out Spa or a glass of wine at Mardona Vineyards.

Warwick, NY: Home of the yearly Applefest, Warwick is a great town to visit for an apple picking weekend. Walk the Warwick Valley Apple Trail and then enjoy a farm to table dinner at Rogowski Farm after an afternoon of picking. The fall menu includes wild boar, apple sausage, and crispy trout.

Stay for the scenic surroundings. Enjoy a swimming, sailing, or water skiing on Greenwood Lake. Hike or take a bike ride along the beautiful Appalachian Trail. Downtown Warwick is also quaint. It is nice to peruse the wide array of antique shops, independent stores, and historic buildings.

Apple Recipes:

You have all of those apples, now what? Well for starters there is always a good old fashioned apple pie. Want to get fancy? Try this butternut squash and apple soup from Delish. To quench you thirst, make some apple cider.

I am going to enjoy some apple cider donuts this weekend, and yes those do exist!
